Join the music team

There are plenty of ways to get involved in the music here at the Cathedral.

Singing and music has been part of daily worship at Chelmsford Cathedral for hundreds of years.

Music is integral to the worshipping and educational life of this holy place. Chelmsford Cathedral Choir has been at the heart of the worshipping life of the Cathedral for over 80 years.

We continue this great tradition through our daily sung services, as well as other musical events and concerts throughout the year.

Chorister Recruitment

Chorister life is busy but a lot of fun, and the benefits of singing are wide, including free musical tuition and singing lessons; singing also helps with literacy, numeracy, social skills and more. We have two choirs here at Chelmsford Cathedral; the Cathedral Choir and the Young Singers.

Short auditions (voice trials) for choristers to join the Cathedral Choir take place throughout the year. There is no audition process for the Young Singers.

Enquiries about joining the choir can be made at any time by contacting our Music Department.

Graham Rogers Organ Scholarship

The Graham Rogers Organ Scholarship is awarded annually and named after a benefactor of the Cathedral’s music. It offers a superb learning opportunity for a gap year or post-graduate student to gain experience as a cathedral organist, working as part of a dedicated and supportive music team in a cathedral; in addition to opportunities to play for regular services and occasional concerts.

For more information contact our Music Department.

Choral Scholarships

Choral scholars are a key part of the music team at Chelmsford Cathedral. A choral scholar will be expected to be a good sight-reader, as the repertoire of the choir is wide and varied and rehearsal time is somewhat limited; previous experience of the Anglican choral repertoire is valuable but not essential.

The scholarships run from the beginning of September until the end of July, including Christmas and Easter; accommodation is provided in nearby houses shared with other Cathedral scholars. Singing lessons are provided and there are frequent opportunities for solo and ensemble performances in a variety of contexts and repertoires.
